Semi-Formal vs. Formal

Solving the debate of semi-formal vs. formal is harder in these contemporary times when it seems that anything goes in the fashion world. While the past had clearer lines between formal and semi-formal wear, there are still meaningful distinctions for today's events.

Cocktail party

Cocktail parties are not considered formal events because the dress code is more flexible. At parties like these, only drinks and hors d'oeuvres are served; there is no sit-down meal. The general rule is that men wear suits and ties, and the ladies don glamorous dresses that are of shorter length than a true formal. For example, the "little black dress" is always thought of as fashionable at a cocktail party, especially when accessorized with sheer hose and high heels.

Semi-formal function

Gowns worn at semi-formal events are a little more elaborate in both style and fabric than those worn at a cocktail party. They are longer and may incorporate glitter or other eye-catching looks. At a semi-formal event, men are still allowed to wear suit and tie, although a dark color like black or brown is most appropriate.

Formal and white tie events

Women's formal gowns are floor length and ornate; they are worn at weddings, exclusive dinners or balls. For such formal events, men are required to wear what is referred to as a "black tie" outfit. This consists of a tuxedo jacket, black trousers, white tuxedo shirt, cummerbund and a black bow tie. At events that call for "white tie," men's dress includes a long black coattail jacket, a white vest, white tuxedo shirt, bow tie and black trousers. Men's patent leather shoes are best for both types of events.

Formal wear has its own traditions, while semi-formal or cocktail wear has a bit more flexibility. There are strict guidelines to follow for displaying good social graces at such events.
